HEALTH EFFECTS: Acute

Ingestion: Swallowing can result in gastrointestinal irritation, in particular nausea and vomiting. May cause central nervous system depression (CNS) and aspiration of material into the lungs, resulting in chemical pneumonitis.
Eye: Product vapour can cause moderate eye irritation.
Skin: The product should not be allowed to come into contact with skin. Frequent contact may cause irritation, including redness, itching and pain.
Inhaled: Inhalation can lead to irritation of the respiratory system. Symptoms of overexposure may include fatigue, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath and possible nausea. Peculiar skin sensations (eg. pins and needles) or numbness may be produced. Very high concentrations of product vapour can cause central nervous system depression which can lead to loss of coordination, impaired judgement, and if exposure is prolonged, narcosis and death.
Chronic
Prolonged and repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis due to the degreasing action of solvents.

Repeated inhalation or skin exposure to n-hexane has been noted to cause peripheral neuropathy in exposed individuals. Cessation of exposure is not immediately followed by improvement and symptoms may even progress for 2-3 months. Final recovery may take more than one year, depending on the severity of the intoxication and may not necessarily be complete. Concurrent exposure to n-hexane and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) will accelerate the onset of n-hexane induced nerve damage, although MEK alone will not cause such damage. Reports of chronic poisoning due to toluene describe anaemia, decreased blood cell count and bone marrow hypoplasia. Liver and kidney damage may occur. Development of a foetus may also be affected.

FIRST AID:
Ingestion: If swallowed and if more than 15 minutes from hospital, induce vomiting, preferably using Ipecac Syrup APF. Keep head below hips to prevent aspiration into lungs. Contact a doctor or poisons information centre immediately while keeping victim at rest. (Australia ph:13 1126)
Eye: Immediately irrigate the eye with plenty of water for at least fifteen minutes, holding the eyelids open. Seek immediate medical attention.
Skin: Remove any contaminated clothing and wash affected areas thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical advice if swelling, redness or irritation occurs.
Inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, apply artificial respiration at once and seek urgent medical advice.
First aid Eye wash fountain, safety shower and normal wash room facilities.

ADVICE TO DOCTOR:
Oral: Extreme care must be taken to prevent aspiration. Treat symptomatically.
Inhalation: Treat symptomatically.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE:

EXPOSURE LIMITS:
Toluene: *TWA 100ppm (377 mg/m 3 ) *STEL 150ppm (565 mg/m 3 )
Hexane (n-Hexane): *TWA 50ppm (176 mg/m 3 ) STEL Not available
* As listed in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission database.

ENGINEERING CONTROLS:

Ventilation: The working area must be adequately ventilated to maintain air concentrations below the exposure limits. If risk of overexposure exists, use with local exhaust ventilation or while wearing a vapour respirator. Product vapour is heavier than air and will collect at low levels. Hence, ventilate by extraction at low levels. Where vapours or mists are generated, particularly in enclosed areas, and natural ventilation is inadequate, a flame-proof exhaust ventilation system is required. For further information concerning ventilation, refer to: AS 1940 – The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids & AS 2430 – Explosive gas atmospheres.
PERSONAL PROTECTION:
Respiratory type: Approved respirators may be necessary to prevent over exposure by inhalation. Refer to AS/NZS 1715 - Selection, use & maintenance of respiratory protective devices.

Glove type: Available information suggests that gloves made from nitrile rubber should be suitable for intermittent contact. However due to variations in glove construction and local conditions, the user should make a final assessment.
Eye protection: Wear safety glasses or chemical goggles to prevent eye contact. Refer to AS/NZS 1337-Eye protectors for industrial use.
Clothing: Wear impervious protective clothing to prevent skin contact. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
Other: Subsequent to handling product, do not eat or drink until after washing hands thoroughly.

FLAMMABILITY:
Product is Highly Flammable. Isolate from sources of heat, naked flames, sparks and strong oxidising materials. Take precautions against static electricity discharges. Earth and bond all process equipment including tanks or drums. Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent an explosive vapour-air mixture. Vapours will travel considerable distances to sources of ignition.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION:

STORAGE AND TRANSPORT:
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources, heat, strong oxidising agents, foodstuffs and clothing. Keep containers closed when not in use. Take precautions against static electricity discharges.
Classified as a Dangerous Good Class 3 Flammable Liquid according to the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail,
Pkg Grp II
Shipping name: ADHESIVES containing flammable liquid
UN Number 1133
Hazchem code: 3[Y]E
Poisons schedule number: S5

SPILLS & DISPOSAL:
Clear area of all unwanted persons. Extinguish or remove all sources of ignition and shut off source of leak if safe to do so. Dyke and contain spill with absorbent inert material (ie. vermiculite, dry sand or earth), using non-sparking tools and equipment. Do not use combustible materials such as sawdust. Place into suitable sealed containers and follow state or local authority regulations and guidelines for disposal of the waste. Do not flush or allow spillage to enter into drains, sewers or watercourses- inform local authority if this occurs.

FIRE/EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
Flammable liquid. Keep storage tanks cool with water spray as they may explode in heat or fire. Take precautions against static electricity discharges. Earth and bond all process equipment, including tanks or drums. Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent an explosive vapour-air mixture. Vapours can travel considerable distances to sources of ignition and flash back. Be aware of the possibility of re-ignition.
Fire fighting recommendations:
Wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Extinguishing media: Use foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide extinguishers.

OTHER INFORMATION:

- 24hrs after application of 2mg on rabbit’s eye showed moderate irritation.

Reproductive toxicity: Has shown some evidence of reproductive effects in laboratory animals.
NOHSC Carcinogen category- Category 3*
*As listed in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission database
Explanation:
Category 3- Unclassifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. This category is used because the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans and inadequate in experimental animals.
