Vapour pressure: 34.5 kPa @ 15°C
Solubility in water: Insoluble
Specific gravity: Approx 0.87
HEALTH EFFECTS: Acute
Ingestion: Moderate to high toxicity, liquids tend to break up into a foam
if patient vomits. May cause aspitation into lungs, chemical pneumonitis may
develop.
Eye: Product vapour can cause severe eye irritation, conjunctivitis corneal
burn and ulceration.
Skin: The product should not be allowed to come into contact with skin.
Frequent contact may cause irritation, including redness, itching and pain
and dermititis.
Inhaled: Toxic by inhalation. High concentration will cause nauses, headache
and vomiting and narcosis.
NOTE:
Repeated inhalation or skin exposure to n-hexane has been noted to cause
peripheral neuropathy in exposed individuals. Both sensory and motor nerve
damage has been documented with long term exposures of greater then 500ppm.
Cessation of exposure is not immediately followed by improvement and
symptoms may even progress for 2-3 months. Final recovery may take more than
one year depending on the severity of the intoxication and may not always be
complete.
FIRST AID:
Ingestion: If swallowed and if more than 15 minutes from hospital, DO NOT
INDUCE VOMITING. Giva a glass of water and GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION.
Eye: Immediately irrigate the eye with plenty of water for at least fifteen
minutes, holding the eyelids open. Seek immediate medical attention.
Skin: Remove any contaminated clothing and wash affected areas thoroughly
with soap and water. Seek medical advice if swelling, redness or irritation
occurs.
Inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, apply
artificial respiration at once and seek urgent medical advice.
First aid Eye wash fountain, safety shower and normal wash room facilities.
ADVICE TO DOCTOR:
Oral: Gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and cramping. Cns
depression, ranging from mild headache to anaesthesia and coma. Pulmonary
irritation secondary to exhalation of solvent. Lavage with cuffed tube if
large quantity ingested. Aspiration is main danger, enforce bed rest and
observe carefully. Prophylactic antibiotice useful. Observe for 24 hours for
chemical pneumonitis, long term medical surveillance may be necessary. Main
airway and vital functions. Avaid sympathomimetic amaines.
Inhalation: Cns depression characterized by headache and dizziness.
PRECAUTIONS FOR USE:
EXPOSURE LIMITS:
Toluol: TVL 100ppm *TWA 375 mg/m 3
Hexane (n-Hexane): TVL 50ppm *TWA 180 mg/m 3
Acetone TVL 500ppm
* As listed in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission
database.
ENGINEERING CONTROLS:
Ventilation: The working area must be adequately ventilated to maintain air
concentrations below the exposure limits. If risk of overexposure exists,
use with local exhaust ventilation or while wearing a vapour respirator.
Product vapour is heavier than air and will collect at low levels. Hence,
ventilate by extraction at low levels. Where vapours or mists are generated,
particularly in enclosed areas, and natural ventilation is inadequate, a
flame-proof exhaust ventilation system is required. For further information
concerning ventilation, refer to: AS 1940 – The storage and handling of
flammable and combustible liquids & AS 2430 – Explosive gas atmospheres.
PERSONAL PROTECTION:
Respiratory type: Approved respirators may be necessary to prevent over
exposure by inhalation. Refer to AS/NZS 1715 - Selection, use & maintenance
of respiratory protective devices.
Glove type: Available information suggests that gloves made from PVC should
be suitable for intermittent contact. However due to variations in glove
construction and local conditions, the user should make a final assessment.
Eye protection: Wear safety glasses or chemical goggles to prevent eye
contact. Refer to AS/NZS 1337-Eye protectors for industrial use.
Clothing: Wear impervious protective clothing to prevent skin contact. Wash
contaminated clothing before reuse.
Other: Subsequent to handling product, do not eat or drink until after
washing hands thoroughly.
FLAMMABILITY:
Product is Highly Flammable (Class 3.1). Isolate from sources of heat, naked
flames, sparks and strong oxidising materials. Take precautions against
static electricity discharges. Earth and bond all process equipment
including tanks or drums. Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent an
explosive vapour-air mixture. Vapours will travel considerable distances to
sources of ignition.
SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION:
STORAGE AND TRANSPORT:
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources, heat,
strong oxidising agents, foodstuffs and clothing. Keep containers closed
when not in use. Take precautions against static electricity discharges.
Classified as a Dangerous Good Class 3 Flammable Liquid according to the
Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail,
Pkg Grp II
Shipping name: ADHESIVES containing flammable liquid
UN Number 1133
Hazchem code: 3[Y]E
Poisons schedule number: S5
SPILLS & DISPOSAL:
Clear area of all unwanted persons. Extinguish or remove all sources of
ignition and shut off source of leak if safe to do so. Dyke and contain
spill with absorbent inert material (ie. vermiculite, dry sand or earth),
using non-sparking tools and equipment. Do not use combustible materials
such as sawdust. Place into suitable sealed containers and follow state or
local authority regulations and guidelines for disposal of the waste. Do not
flush or allow spillage to enter into drains, sewers or watercourses- inform
local authority if this occurs.
FIRE/EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
Flammable liquid. Keep storage tanks cool with water spray as they may
explode in heat or fire. Take precautions against static electricity
discharges. Earth and bond all process equipment, including tanks or drums.
Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent an explosive vapour-air mixture.
Vapours can travel considerable distances to sources of ignition and flash
back. Be aware of the possibility of re-ignition.
Fire fighting recommendations:
Wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Extinguishing media: Use foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide extinguishers.
Dangerous Decomposition Products:
Carbon monoxide and other unidentifiable organic compounds may be formed
during combustion.
OTHER INFORMATION:
TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION:
Toluene:
Irritation data: - Moderate irritation after applying 500mg onto rabbit
skin.
- 24hrs after application of 2mg on rabbit’s eye showed moderate irritation.
Reproductive toxicity: Has shown some evidence of reproductive effects in
laboratory animals.
NOHSC Carcinogen category- Category 3*
*As listed in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission database
Explanation:
Category 3- Unclassifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. This
category is used because the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in
humans and inadequate in experimental animals.
n-Hexane:
Irritation data: - 24hrs after application of 10mg on rabbit’s eye showed
mild irritation
NOHSC* Carcinogen category- none
